Interconnection is the part homeowners underestimate. When alarms are interconnected, any one of them detecting smoke sounds all of them, which means a fire starting in a garage or a back bedroom wakes people at the other end of the house immediately rather than after the smoke has traveled far enough to reach them. Hardwired systems interconnect over a dedicated conductor, and wireless interconnected units are an option in homes where running that conductor is impractical. Either approach is a substantial improvement over standalone alarms operating independently.
A few findings should prompt a call. Alarms carry a manufacture date on the back, and units past ten years should be replaced rather than tested and kept, because the sensing element degrades regardless of whether the alarm has ever sounded.
