Isolation Test and Evaporator Leak Identified in Naples, FL

Naples Wine Cooler Leak Repair

A homeowner in Naples, Florida reached out regarding a wine cooler system that had been underperforming and was suspected to be low on refrigerant. Given the sensitivity of wine storage and the need for precise temperature control, it was essential to identify the cause of the refrigerant loss and confirm whether a leak was affecting the unit’s efficiency.

Initial diagnostics revealed that the system was indeed low on refrigerant. One pound of R-134A was added to restore temporary cooling, and a detailed leak search was performed. Despite visual inspection and electronic testing, the exact source of the leak could not be immediately confirmed. Due to the system’s layout, including a difficult-to-access air handler in a narrow enclosure, a full system isolation test was recommended to accurately identify the leak point without dismantling the entire unit prematurely.

Leak Isolation, Evaporator Diagnosis, and Temporary Recharge for Wine Cooler System

On return service, a second technician conducted a more extensive electronic leak search and successfully confirmed the presence of a leak in the evaporator coil. To ensure there were no other hidden leaks within the system, a full isolation test was performed. Nitrogen pressure was applied to the suction and liquid lines, as well as the evaporator and condensing unit.

The system was left under isolation pressure, with plans to return and verify pressure stability as part of the diagnostic process.

Upon follow-up, the isolation test confirmed that no additional leaks were present. The technician reconnected the system, pressure tested it for safety, pulled a deep vacuum, and charged it with 3 lbs of R-134A to restore cooling temporarily.

During this final phase, it was noted that the return air flex duct was saturated with moisture, a clear sign of potential airflow or insulation issues. Our technician recommended that the duct be replaced during the evaporator coil replacement. Detailed coil specifications and copper requirements were documented for the follow-up repair, including 5’10” of copper line and appropriate splicing materials.

Leak Confirmed, System Stabilized, & Clear Repair Path Forward

Accurate Diagnosis and System Integrity Preserved

The isolation test successfully identified the evaporator coil as the sole leak point, confirming the integrity of the remaining system components. By performing the repair in stages, the homeowner was able to maintain temporary cooling and preserve wine storage conditions while preparing for final coil replacement.

This precision diagnostic and step by step service provided by our team ensured minimal system disruption while providing the homeowner with confidence in the repair plan. Once the evaporator coil and affected ductwork are replaced, the system will be fully restored with reliable long term cooling performance.
