What Makes a Ceiling Fan Installation Hold Up
Almost every ceiling fan problem traces back to one of two things: the box it is mounted to, or the environment it was rated for. A standard light fixture box is designed to carry a static weight. A fan adds continuous vibration and rotational load, and a box that was never listed for fan support will loosen over time. This is the single most common finding when we are called about a fan that wobbles, and the fan itself is usually fine.
Rating is the second issue and it matters more here than almost anywhere. A lanai in Southwest Florida is a damp location at minimum, and a fan under an open or partially exposed structure near the coast lives in salt air with real moisture exposure. Interior rated fans installed outdoors corrode at the motor housing and bearings, develop rust streaks down the blades, and fail years earlier than they should. Choosing damp or wet rated equipment appropriate to the actual location is not an upsell, it is the reason the fan lasts.
Most of the fan problems we are called about come back to those two issues. Wobble is nearly always a box that was never rated for fan support, or one that has loosened over years of vibration, and a balancing kit only treats a symptom the mount is causing. Interior rated fans installed on lanais and covered patios corrode at the motor and hardware and fail years earlier than properly rated equipment would. Rooms that never had a fan usually have no switch leg to the ceiling, so running proper wall control for both the fan and the light is worth doing while the ceiling is open. And in great rooms and high ceiling spaces, an undersized fan mounted twelve feet up moves very little air where people are actually sitting.

Naples also produces the most requests for fans integrated into broader control systems rather than operated on a standalone wall switch.
Sanibel Island
On Sanibel, fan selection matters more than installation technique. Salt air is relentless on motor housings, hardware, and finishes, and standard outdoor rated fans will still show corrosion faster here than they would a few miles inland. We recommend marine grade or coastal rated equipment for island installations, particularly on elevated homes where the fan sits in essentially unfiltered island air.
Captiva Island
Captiva properties are heavily oriented toward outdoor living, and fans are a bigger part of comfort here than they are inland, since many island homes rely on cross ventilation and covered outdoor space.
