Powering Southwest Florida Homes Since 1995

Electrical Panel Replacement and Upgrades in Fort Myers

Your electrical panel is the single point every circuit in your home passes through. When it is undersized, aging, or built by a manufacturer with a known safety record, everything downstream of it is affected. Homeowners across Southwest Florida call us when breakers will not hold, when a panel is too full to add a circuit, or when an insurance carrier or home inspector flags the panel by name.

Mabry Brothers has been replacing and upgrading residential electrical panels across Fort Myers, Estero, Bonita Springs, Naples, Sanibel Island, and Captiva Island since 1995. Our licensed electricians handle the load calculation, the permit, the utility coordination, and the changeover itself, so you are not managing three separate parties to get one job done.

Most panel work in this area falls into one of three situations: a failing panel that needs replaced, a service that needs more capacity than it was built for, or a fuse box that has finally reached the end of what it can safely support. We will tell you which one you are actually in before we quote anything.

Most Panel Failures Give Warning Before They Give Out

Signs Your Electrical Panel Needs Attention

Panels rarely fail without notice. They usually spend months or years telling you something is wrong in ways that are easy to explain away. A breaker that trips once a summer becomes a breaker that trips weekly. A panel that felt warm to the touch on a hot afternoon starts smelling faintly of hot plastic. Because the failure is gradual, homeowners tend to adapt around it rather than address it, and the panel keeps degrading.

That slow decline matters more here than it does in most of the country. Southwest Florida homes run heavy electrical loads nearly year round, coastal humidity accelerates corrosion at every connection point, and summer storm activity puts repeated surge stress on service equipment. A panel that might last decades elsewhere works considerably harder in Lee and Collier County, which is why an evaluation is worth scheduling at the first sign of trouble rather than the third.

In practice the warnings are specific enough to recognize. Breakers that trip on the same circuit week after week, or that feel loose and will not stay set, point to a failing breaker, a loose bus connection, or a circuit carrying more than it was built for. Warmth on the enclosure, browning around a breaker, or the smell of hot plastic all indicate resistance where there should be none. A panel that has begun to buzz is rarely doing so harmlessly, since a properly functioning panel is silent. And a panel with no room left, or one already running tandem breakers to squeeze in extra circuits, will not support a pool heater, a car charger, an addition, or a kitchen remodel without being addressed first.

Replacement, Upgrades, and Everything Between

Electrical Panel Services We Provide

From a straightforward replacement to a full service upgrade, we handle every part of the job, including the load calculation, the permit, and the coordination with your utility provider. Panel work requires a permit and a final inspection throughout Lee and Collier County, and we pull it, schedule it, and meet the inspector. The services below cover nearly everything homeowners call us about.

Electrical Panel Replacement

Most of the panel work we do in Southwest Florida is replacement rather than first time installation, because the housing stock here is old enough that original panels are reaching end of life. We remove the existing panel, install new service equipment sized to your home, and transfer and label every circuit.

Panel Upgrades and Increased Service Capacity

If your home was built for a 100 amp service and now runs a pool, a heat pump, and a car charger, capacity is the constraint. We perform a load calculation based on your actual and planned usage, then upgrade the service to the amperage the home genuinely needs rather than a number picked off a shelf.

Circuit Breaker Replacement

Breakers wear out, and they do not always fail in an obvious way. We replace failed and failing breakers with the correct type and rating for your panel, including AFCI and GFCI breakers where current code requires them. A breaker replacement is never a guess at what fits.

Sub Panel Installation and Upgrades

Additions, detached garages, guest houses, workshops, and pool equipment areas frequently need their own distribution point. We install and upgrade sub panels fed properly from the main service, with correct grounding and bonding separation, which is one of the most commonly miswired parts of a residential system.

Fuse Box Replacement

A fuse box is not inherently unsafe, but it is a sign of a service that predates most modern electrical demand. We replace fuse panels with modern breaker panels, which restores capacity, adds the arc fault and ground fault protection current code calls for, and removes a common obstacle to homeowners insurance.

Panel Repairs

Not every panel needs replaced. Loose lugs, corroded connections, a failed main breaker, or water intrusion at the enclosure can sometimes be corrected without a full changeover. When repair is the right call, we say so, and we will tell you plainly if it is only buying time.

Why Work With Mabry Brothers for Your Electrical Panel Replacement?

A panel changeover touches the service entrance, the grounding electrode system, every branch circuit in the home, and the utility connection. It is one of the few residential jobs where a shortcut is not visible afterward and shows up years later. Mabry Brothers has been doing this work in Southwest Florida since 1995 under electrical license EC13006459, and the crews doing your panel are the same crews that wire our new construction and remodel projects.

That construction background matters more than it sounds like it should. Rough in work forces you to think about a home’s electrical system as a whole rather than as one box on a wall, and it means when we size your service we are accounting for what you are likely to add over the next ten years. If a panel replacement is happening alongside a kitchen or whole home remodel, we can sequence the two so you are not paying to open the same walls twice.

Panel Work Across Lee and Collier County

Electrical Panel Services Throughout Southwest Florida

Panel conditions vary considerably across our service area because the housing stock does. A 1960s ranch off McGregor and a 2018 build in Estero present completely different problems, and a home a few hundred feet from open water ages its service equipment faster than one inland. Here is what we typically find in each community we serve.

Fort Myers

Fort Myers has the widest range of panel conditions in our service area. The older neighborhoods along the McGregor corridor and near downtown still have original 60 and 100 amp services, and a meaningful number of Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Challenger panels are still in place in homes built between the 1950s and early 1980s. Those brands are frequently flagged by home inspectors and insurance carriers, and replacement is usually the recommended path rather than repair. Newer sections of Fort Myers tend to have adequate panels that simply ran out of space as homeowners added pool equipment, a spa, or a car charger.

Estero

Most Estero homes were built from the late 1990s forward, so we see fewer end of life panels here and more capacity problems. Homes in the communities around Coconut Point and Estero Parkway were built with panels adequate for the load at the time, and those loads have grown. Panel upgrades in Estero are most often driven by EV charger installations, pool heat pump additions, and lanai and outdoor kitchen buildouts that need dedicated circuits the existing panel cannot supply.

Bonita Springs

Bonita Springs splits cleanly between the older housing stock near Old 41 and Bonita Beach Road and the newer gated communities to the east. In the older areas we handle a steady volume of fuse box and small service replacements, often on homes that have been renovated inside without the service ever being addressed. In the newer communities the work skews toward sub panel additions for detached structures and pool equipment, and toward surge protection retrofits after storm season damage.

Naples

Naples homes are frequently large enough that a standard 200 amp service is not sufficient. We regularly work on 320 and 400 amp services, and Naples generates more sub panel work than anywhere else in our territory: guest houses, casitas, detached garages, summer kitchens, pool equipment pads, and landscape lighting transformers all pulling from properly fed distribution points rather than long runs back to an overloaded main. Load calculations matter here because the connected load on a large Naples home is genuinely hard to estimate by eye.

Sanibel Island

Sanibel presents a corrosion problem before it presents a capacity problem. Salt air reaches the service equipment on nearly every property on the island, and corrosion at lugs, bus bars, and breaker contacts creates resistance and heat long before anything trips. Many Sanibel homes are elevated, which puts the panel and meter in exposed locations, and a substantial number of services on the island were replaced or repaired after Hurricane Ian. We pay particular attention to enclosure condition, gasket integrity, and connection corrosion on every Sanibel panel evaluation.

Captiva Island

Captiva sees the most severe coastal exposure of anywhere we work, combined with a high proportion of seasonal homes that sit unoccupied for months. That combination is difficult on service equipment, because corrosion progresses without anyone present to notice heat, odor, or buzzing at the panel. For seasonal Captiva homeowners we recommend having the panel evaluated before the season starts rather than after, and we build in surge protection as a matter of course given how exposed the island is during summer storm activity.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently Asked Electrical Panel Questions

How do I know whether my panel needs replaced or just repaired?
It depends on what is failing. A single bad breaker, a loose lug, or a corroded connection can often be repaired. Damage to the bus bar, an enclosure that has taken water, a panel that is full with no room to expand, or a brand with a known safety record generally means replacement is the better decision. Our electricians will evaluate the panel and tell you which situation you are in before quoting the work.
What size electrical panel does my home need?
That comes from a load calculation, not from a rule of thumb. We look at the square footage, the HVAC equipment, the water heater, the range and dryer, pool and spa equipment, any EV charging, and anything you are planning to add. Many Southwest Florida homes land at 200 amps, but larger homes with pools, detached structures, and multiple air handlers often need more, and some smaller homes are fine with less.
Do I need a permit to replace an electrical panel in Lee County?
Yes. Panel replacements and service changes require a permit and a final inspection throughout Lee and Collier County, and the work must be performed by a licensed electrical contractor. We pull the permit, coordinate the utility disconnect and reconnect, and meet the inspector. Unpermitted panel work commonly causes problems during a home sale and can create issues with homeowners insurance claims.
How long will my power be off during a panel replacement?
For a standard residential changeover, expect your power to be off for most of a working day. The exact window depends on the number of circuits, the condition of the existing wiring, and how quickly the utility can complete the meter pull and reset. We schedule that coordination in advance specifically to keep the outage as short as possible, and we will give you a realistic window before the day of the work.
Are Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels really a problem?
Both brands have long standing documented concerns about breakers that may not trip reliably under fault conditions, and both are commonly flagged by home inspectors and insurance carriers in Southwest Florida. Replacement parts are also increasingly difficult to source. If your home was built between roughly the 1950s and the early 1980s and still has its original panel, it is worth having identified and evaluated.
