Electric resistance heat strips in the same air handler deliver exactly one unit of heat per unit of electricity consumed. The efficiency advantage of heat pump heating over resistance heating in our climate is significant for any homeowner who uses heat with any frequency during the winter months.

If the home is only occasionally heated, such as a seasonal vacation property where heat is needed for brief pre-arrival conditioning rather than sustained winter comfort, the operational cost difference between heat pump and resistance heat may not justify the equipment cost premium. If the existing system is a standard AC and only the outdoor unit needs replacement due to a failure, replacing with a standard AC outdoor unit rather than converting to heat pump may make practical sense depending on the age of the indoor unit and the overall condition of the system.
